With the scores locked at 98-98 Pierce poured in a jump shot from 21 yards, taking his personal tally to 32 for the night.
Dwayne Wade, who was taken from the court injured after missing a potentially winning throw seconds before Pierce's effort, contributed 34 points for Miami.
